Comprehensive Social-Emotional Learning Resources
Perspective Taking Activities | Social Skills Treasury Set 3
Help upper elementary students explore perspective taking, empathy, theory of mind, and social awareness with engaging reading, writing, and reflection activities! This Perspective Taking Social Skills Treasury Set 3 combines social emotional learning (SEL) with literacy-based activities to help children recognize that people can have different thoughts, feelings, experiences, and points of view.
Students read a story, answer 12 reflection questions, complete writing responses and graphic organizers, explore discussion quotes, and create a 6-page perspective taking flipbook. These activities encourage children to think about different perspectives, consider what information another person might have, and explore how understanding others can support friendships, communication, and social problem-solving.
Designed for upper elementary students, this resource is ideal for school counselors, school social workers, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, special education teachers, and classroom educators. Use it during individual counseling, small-group counseling, classroom SEL lessons, social skills instruction, and literacy activities.
Rather than expecting students to guess exactly what someone else is thinking, these activities create opportunities to consider multiple possibilities, ask thoughtful questions, and recognize that people can experience the same situation differently.

📌 Important Notes:
Perspective taking is not the same as accurately guessing another person's thoughts or feelings. These activities encourage students to consider possibilities, recognize different experiences, and ask questions rather than make assumptions.
Facial expressions, body language, and communication styles vary across individuals and cultures. Students should not be expected to interpret every nonverbal cue in the same way.
Perspective taking does not mean students must agree with someone else, ignore their own needs, or change their boundaries to make others comfortable.
Students may demonstrate understanding through discussion, writing, drawing, pointing, or other preferred communication methods.
This resource is Set 3 of the Social Skills Treasury Perspective Taking series and can be used independently or alongside Sets 1 and 2.
